The Photonics Days Jena 2022 will take place from October 5 to 6, 2022, as a virtual online and on-site event held in English. You can choose whether to participate in Photonics Days Jena online or in person. A larger range of programs is available for participants in presence in Jena. Both online and on-site participants receive access to the event platform. We also offer on-site participants the opportunity to dial into the online-only program items.

At the Makeathon, you will work in small teams on exciting projects. You’ll develop small gadgets or product ideas in the context of photonics and implement them as prototypes using new technologies and tools such as 3D printing or laser cutting. It’s all about creative exchange and contributing your own skills and ideas! The projects are based on local research and industry and can be individually shaped by you. To participate in the Makeathon, it is necessary to attend the premeeting, where initial ideas will be discussed. The premeeting will take place digitally on 9/28/2022 from 4:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m (CEST).

In her talk, Dr. Carmen Köhler will tell us about her non-linear career path and how this included becoming an analog astronaut. Analog astronauts perform research for future human missions to the Moon or Mars in environments on Earth with analogies with the extraterrestrial bodies. During these Mars simulation missions, Carmen gained valuable experience in extreme environments, and the challenges they present. She will share her experiences and derived lessons for sustainable life on Earth from a life on the unsustainable planet Mars.
